The Mercury Problem in Artisanal Gold Mining. Mercury-based artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) causes more mercury pollution than any other human activity. 1 In this practice, mercury metal is used to extract gold from ore as a stable amalgam. The amalgam is then heated to evaporate the mercury and isolate the gold.

In drill and blast mining (conventional mining) the coal face is cut across the centre of the face from one side to the other using an electric coal cutter. This cut is usually 2.4 metres deep into the coal seam. The face is then drilled using electric drills to create holes with diameters of around 25mm.

Highwall mining is an adaptation of auger mining. Instead of an auger hole, an entry into the coal seam is made by a continuous miner, remotely operated from a cabin at the surface. The cut coal is transported by conveyors behind the miner to the outside. Using a television camera, the operator can see and control the miner's progress.
