In 2020, gold contributed close to GHC 7.8 billion, roughly 1.3 billion U.S. dollars to Ghana's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, an estimated $2.3 billion worth of illegally-mined gold left Ghana in 2016.

Gold is the predominant mineral produced in the country accounting for over 90% of all mineral revenues annually over the past two decades. Ghana is endowed with immense economic mineral resources such as gold, diamonds, manganese, bauxite, clays, kaolin, mica, columbite-tantalite, feldspar, chrome, silica sand, quartz, salt etc.

THE GHANA CHAMBER OF MINES

Ghana's geological landscape teems with a variety of minerals with the commercially exploited ones being gold, diamond, manganese and bauxite. In 2020, gold accounted for 97.2 per cent of gross mineral revenue while the respective shares of manganese, bauxite and diamond were. 2.25 per cent, 0.54 per cent and 0.01 per cent.
